Delhi’s Voter List Purge: 47.7 Lakh Names Stricken from Draft Roll

In a significant electoral update, nearly 47.7 lakh voters in Delhi have been removed from the draft voter list as part of a comprehensive special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. This action, reported by The Indian Express, has led to a potential reduction of the electorate in the national capital to approximately 97.5 lakh, a stark decline from the earlier figure of 1.45 crore since the revision process commenced in June.

The substantial removal of names from the voter list translates to around 33% of the electorate being excluded. Those affected have been categorized as permanently relocated, deceased, absent, or marked as duplicate entries. However, the specifics of an ambiguous “other” category remain unclear, raising questions about the criteria used for this classification.

Voters who find their names missing from the draft list will have the opportunity to file claims and objections from August 31 to September 30. All appeals will be addressed by October 29, and the final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on November 4. This revision process reflects a broader electoral strategy aimed at ensuring the accuracy and integrity of voter rolls in the region.

In terms of digitization efforts during this revision, the locality of Rohini achieved the highest rate of completion at 83.4%, while Tughlakabad recorded the lowest at 52.1%. This reflects varied levels of engagement in the digitization process across different areas. Delhi is one of 19 states and Union Territories currently undergoing voter roll revisions in this third phase of the SIR initiative.

Previous revisions in other states have shown similar trends. For instance, over 19% of voters in Karnataka, 16% in Haryana, and 10.8% in Andhra Pradesh have been removed from their draft lists in connection with this nationwide exercise, which plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of electoral processes across India. As the political landscape evolves, such measures highlight the ongoing efforts to streamline and authenticate electoral participation in the country.
