VHP Calls for Meat Ban Inside Durga Puja Pandal: A Push for Traditional Practices

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has made a significant appeal to the organisers of Durga Puja celebrations in West Bengal, advocating for the exclusion of meat products from within the puja pandals. This request comes amidst ongoing discussions about maintaining the sanctity and traditional values associated with one of India’s most vibrant festivals, as reported by India Today.

Nirgunananda, a member of the VHP’s central advisory council, clarified that the organisation is not demanding a strictly vegetarian diet during the festivities. Instead, the VHP suggests that non-vegetarian food stalls be allocated in specific areas outside the pandals. This approach aims to respect the cultural fabric of Bengal while also addressing concerns about cleanliness and reverence in the vicinity of the deity.

“Durga Puja in Bengal has never been strictly about vegetarianism,” Nirgunananda stated, acknowledging the state’s rich culinary diversity. However, he emphasized that the area surrounding the idol should be kept clean to maintain its sanctity. Any leftover food from these stalls should not pollute the sacred space, he added.

The VHP’s call aligns with its broader agenda to uphold traditional Hindu values, a sentiment shared by other Hindutva organisations, including the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which is closely linked to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
