The majestic Mt Langtang Lirung, standing at an impressive 7,245 meters in height and located just 45 kilometers north of Kathmandu, has long been a site of both awe and tragedy. The mountain’s history took a dark turn in April 2015 when a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck central Nepal, triggering a catastrophic avalanche that buried the village of Langtang and claimed the lives of at least 300 individuals.
In the latest series of events, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake rattled the Nepal-China border at 8:37 AM on Wednesday. Coinciding with this tremor was a massive avalanche cascading down the mountain’s north face. Experts who have examined satellite imagery from Planet Labs suggest that the debris flow from the avalanche obstructed the swollen Lhende Khola River, which serves as the natural border between Nepal and China. Soon after, the resulting impounded lake overflowed, unleashing a torrent of mud and rock into the Trisuli River, cascading down through Nepal.
There remains a debate among scientists regarding the cause-and-effect relationship between the earthquake and the subsequent avalanche. While some argue that the seismic activity triggered the slope collapse, others contend that the avalanche’s sheer magnitude may have been the catalyst for the seismic event.
The tragedy unfolding along the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli river corridor highlights the pressing issues posed by climate change.
