Khalistan Separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun Claims FBI and RCMP Alerted Him to Life Threat

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a prominent figure in the Khalistan separatist movement and the general counsel for Sikhs for Justice, has revealed that both the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have warned him about a credible threat to his life. This alarming claim was reported by The Globe and Mail on Tuesday, highlighting the international dimensions of Pannun’s situation.

According to Pannun, who holds dual citizenship in the United States and Canada, FBI agents contacted him on August 20, advising him to refrain from traveling until the situation regarding the threat is clarified. He reported being instructed to notify the agency before making any travel plans. However, specific details about the alleged threats or the individuals involved have not been disclosed by either the FBI or the RCMP, both of which remain silent despite inquiries from the media.

Pannun, known for his advocacy of an independent Sikh state, stated that he does not fear for his life, emphasizing his hopes that the governments of the United States and Canada will address what he perceives as threats to their sovereignty from the Indian government, specifically citing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This sentiment reflects the ongoing tensions between the Indian government and activists advocating for Khalistan, which is a movement seeking a separate Sikh homeland.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, in February, an Indian national named Nikhil Gupta pled guilty to a conspiracy to assassinate Pannun, allegedly acting under directives from an employee of the Indian government. The Indian government has classified Pannun as a terrorist under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, although it has not publicly commented on Gupta’s guilty plea. Gupta’s sentencing is anticipated on November 20.
