Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, has been returned to prison after a short medical visit to an Islamabad hospital. This move comes just days after the Supreme Court of Pakistan issued an order for Khan to be examined medically, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding his health while incarcerated.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court mandated that Khan be transferred to a hospital within 48 hours for medical evaluation in light of the numerous health issues he has reportedly been facing. While expectations were set for him to remain hospitalized until September 16, the authorities decided to move him back to Adiala Jail sooner than anticipated.
This swift return to prison follows pressure from Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and his family, who have consistently expressed worries about his declining health and the conditions of his imprisonment. In February, Khan’s son, Kasim, revealed alarming information regarding Khan’s eyesight, stating that his father has lost significant vision in his right eye, with only about 15% remaining. These concerns have only intensified the scrutiny over his treatment during his incarceration.
During his hospital visit, Khan was admitted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences rather than a private facility, a choice that was attributed to security complications caused by supporters of his party. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed this decision via social media, indicating that the political landscape surrounding the former leader is fraught with tension and uncertainty.
Khan, who transitioned from a celebrated cricketer to a prominent political figure, was arrested in August 2023 and has since been held in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. He faces multiple criminal charges, many of which relate to allegations of corruption. As Pakistan continues to grapple with political turmoil, the situation surrounding Khan remains critical, reflecting the intense and often contentious nature of the country’s current political climate.
