Rahul Gandhi Demands Justice for Pellet Gun Victim in Protest at DCP Office

On Friday, Rahul Gandhi, the former president of the Indian National Congress, staged a sit-in protest outside the Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police’s office. This demonstration was in response to the police’s purported refusal to register a First Information Report (FIR) for a student who sustained injuries from pellet gun fire during a youth protest in the capital on July 20.

The student in question, Sahil Lochav, had lodged a formal complaint on August 14 regarding the incident, which Congress representatives claim was met with negligence by the authorities. According to the party, Lochav sought police assistance once again on August 17, but his attempts—including emails and phone calls—were dismissed without action.

The Congress party labeled this situation as a “blatant injustice,” emphasizing the need for accountability. During the protest, Gandhi reiterated his accusations against the police, stating that they had deployed pellet guns against peaceful protesters, including Lochav, who had been advocating for their rights during the march toward Parliament.

Gandhi’s statements highlighted the seriousness of the injuries sustained by Lochav, noting that the student has suffered significant damage to his eye and is at risk of losing vision. The protest aimed to draw attention not only to Lochav’s plight but also to the broader issue of police brutality against citizens in the country.

The rally on July 20 had been organized to voice concerns about various youth issues, and Gandhi criticized the current government, particularly Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for their heavy-handed response to the situation. He questioned Shah’s reluctance to pursue justice, asserting that a formal FIR would be registered and that a judicial inquiry would follow. Gandhi vowed that those responsible for the alleged brutality would face consequences, underscoring the Congress party’s commitment to fighting for the rights of the marginalized.
