In a significant development, United Nations human rights experts have expressed concerns regarding the Indian authorities’ heavy-handed approach toward peaceful protests led by youth across the country. This statement comes in the wake of ongoing demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with protests intensifying in New Delhi and other cities.
The UN experts, comprising special rapporteurs, independent analysts, and members of various working groups appointed by the UN Human Rights Council, have called on the Indian government to immediately halt the excessive use of force against protestors. They are urging the authorities to lift blanket bans on public gatherings and to refrain from deploying intrusive digital surveillance methods against demonstrators.
In recent months, a vast number of students and supporters have taken to the streets to voice their discontent with governmental policies impacting the education system. More recently, protests have focused on the deletion of voter rolls, which reportedly affects around 130 million individuals, including members of the Muslim minority and Scheduled Castes and Tribes. Despite the peaceful nature of these assemblies, eyewitness accounts suggest that law enforcement has resorted to forceful measures, including lathi charges, to disperse the crowds, making it difficult for individuals to join the protests.
The UN experts noted that, despite the protests being largely non-violent, police actions have resulted in significant disruptions. Over 7,000 individuals, including young activists, journalists, human rights advocates, legal professionals, and political party members, have reportedly faced detention during these demonstrations. This has raised alarms regarding the state’s commitment to upholding the right to peaceful assembly as enshrined in international human rights laws.
The criticism from UN experts underscores the growing concern over civil liberties in India, a nation that prides itself on its democratic values. As the government grapples with public dissent, the international community is closely observing how it navigates these protests, particularly in light of calls for reform in various sectors, including education and electoral integrity. The future trajectory of these demonstrations will likely depend on how effectively the government addresses the grievances of the protestors while safeguarding their rights.
