The recent arrest of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das, and Ajinkya Shinde by the Delhi Police has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties. The leaders were detained on Tuesday for allegedly trespassing at Jantar Mantar, a well-known site for public protests in the capital. This incident has ignited discussions about citizens’ rights to protest and the government’s approach to dissent.
Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, voiced his disapproval on social media, asserting that “waving the tricolour” during a peaceful demonstration should not be considered a criminal act. He emphasized that jailing young individuals for expressing their views is a sign of cowardice, asserting that Jantar Mantar is a space that belongs to the Indian populace. He further stated, “We will reclaim it,” reflecting a strong stance against what he perceives as governmental overreach.
According to reports, Ranka and Das were placed in judicial custody for five days following a magistrate court’s ruling, while Shinde was released on a personal bond. The three leaders, along with other members of the CJP, had gathered at Jantar Mantar to protest the government’s decision to remove the area’s designation as a protest site. This controversial move has sparked concerns about the shrinking space for public dissent in India.
The protests were marked by the display of the national flag, which some officials deemed as a breach of peace. Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee criticized the central government for what he described as a misguided effort to suppress citizens exercising their rights. He pointed out that the arrests indicate a troubling trend where individuals are being penalized for merely waving the national flag in their own country.
Adding to the outcry, Neha Bora, the head of the All India Students’ Association, argued that the arrests reflect a broader attempt by the current administration to stifle dissent and limit the voices of young activists. The CJP’s protest and the subsequent arrests highlight the ongoing tensions between governmental authority and public expression in India, raising critical questions about the future of democratic freedoms in the country.
