In a significant move, Jantar Mantar, a well-known venue for public protests in Delhi, has been officially removed from the list of designated protest sites. This decision, made by the Delhi Commissioner of Police Anurag Kumar on October 11, follows recommendations from a committee established by the Union Home Ministry. As a result, alternative locations for protests have been designated, including Ramlila Ground in Central Delhi, Burari Ground in the northern part of the city, and CBD Ground located in Shahdara area of eastern Delhi.
The backdrop to this decision includes ongoing protests in the national capital led by the Cockroach Janta Party, alongside various opposition factions and student organizations. These groups are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, which has sparked considerable unrest and debate within political circles.
In the wake of the protests, the Kerala Legislative Assembly also passed a resolution calling for the removal of Gyanesh Kumar from his post. This resolution, which was introduced by Chief Minister VD Satheesan, met with opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who proposed amendments to the motion. However, these amendments were ultimately rejected by the Assembly, highlighting the divisions within the political landscape.
The resolution from Kerala aims to enhance transparency in the operations of the Election Commission, emphasizing the need for corrective measures regarding electoral rolls. It calls upon the central government and the Election Commission to rectify issues identified during the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, ensuring that all eligible voters regain their voting rights.
The situation has raised questions about the legality of police actions, especially as thousands of protesters were arrested in various locations distant from Jantar Mantar. As discussions continue about the implications of the denotification and the broader electoral reforms demanded by various political entities, the national focus remains on how these developments will unfold in the coming days, particularly as they pertain to the integrity of the electoral process in India.
