On Sunday, protests erupted across various regions in Maharashtra and Goa, where demonstrators faced police clampdowns as they called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protesters raised concerns about alleged irregularities related to the recent special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
In Mumbai, the Cockroach Janta Party organized a gathering scheduled for 4 PM at Shivaji Park, but police imposed restrictions that prevented demonstrators from assembling in the vicinity. Several protesters were detained at Dadar station, and others faced arrest merely for moving around the area.
As the situation escalated, Mumbai Police began detaining leaders of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and local activists who had gathered outside the Shiv Sena Bhawan to voice their dissent. Notably, Uddhav Sena leader Aditya Thackeray attempted to intervene by climbing onto a police van in a bid to halt the removal of the detained protesters.
In Pune, the protests saw participation from around 80 to 100 individuals, including members of various Left factions, who gathered at Good Luck Chowk. Reports indicate that these protesters were also taken into custody by police and transported to Shivajinagar Police Station. Such actions have drawn criticism regarding the state’s approach to managing civic dissent.
The protests emerge amidst heightened tensions about electoral transparency and fairness in India, reflecting widespread public concern regarding the integrity of the electoral process. As discontent simmers across the nation, the demand for accountability from electoral authorities continues to grow, with citizens calling for a system that upholds democratic principles.
