Delhi has witnessed a disturbing incident involving violence against peaceful demonstrators, leading to the arrest of four individuals. The arrests came after a video surfaced online showing these men, allegedly affiliated with the Hindutva group Hindu Rakshak Dal, attacking protesters opposing Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Saturday.
The footage, which quickly went viral, depicts a chaotic scene where one man is seen striking a male protester while a woman attempts to intervene. Another segment of the video captures a different assailant assaulting a female protester, forcibly pushing her to the ground, amid the presence of law enforcement officials. The visible inaction of police during this confrontation has raised significant concerns about their role in safeguarding the rights of peaceful protesters.
Following the widespread dissemination of the video, the police took immediate action, invoking suo motu powers to respond to the incident. An unnamed officer revealed that the individuals responsible for the assault have been identified as Raman Saini, 50; Vivekanand, also known as Vivek, 32; Kapil Kumar, 27; and Ravinder Singh, referred to as Govind Hindu, 35. These men were apprehended under the jurisdiction of the Kamla Market Police Station, located on DDU Marg, where the violence occurred.
This incident has provoked a significant backlash on social media, with various users expressing outrage over the apparent complicity of the police. One social media account, named Cockroach Janta Party, shared the video, criticizing the police for allegedly aiding the attackers instead of protecting the demonstrators. The commentary accompanying the post questioned the motives behind the police’s actions and called into question the safety of citizens engaging in peaceful protests.
The protest itself was part of a larger movement addressing grievances toward the electoral process in India. Demonstrators have voiced concerns about the impartiality and integrity of the Election Commission, especially in light of recent controversies surrounding electoral practices. This violent episode has brought to the forefront issues of public safety and the responsibilities of law enforcement to ensure that citizens can exercise their democratic rights without fear of reprisal.
