In a tragic incident that unfolded on Wednesday afternoon, a four-storey residential building in Seemapuri, located in northeast Delhi, collapsed, injuring seven individuals and trapping at least five others beneath the rubble. The building caved in around 3:30 PM, prompting immediate rescue operations at the scene.
District Magistrate Ajay Kumar confirmed the injuries and stated that rescue teams were deployed promptly to assess and manage the situation. As crews worked diligently, officials reported that parts of two or three neighboring houses were also affected, adding to the urgency of the rescue efforts.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the structure had exhibited visible cracks following tremors that were felt across the national capital a day prior, due to an earthquake in Uttarakhand. This raises concerns over the safety and integrity of buildings in the region, as officials hinted at a thorough investigation to determine the precise cause of the collapse.
In response to the incident, the Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory urging drivers to steer clear of the Seemapuri area to facilitate the ongoing rescue operations. Commuters were warned of traffic disruptions around key points, including Seemapuri Gol Chakkar and DLF Bhopura, emphasizing the importance of clear routes for emergency vehicles.
This unfortunate event echoes a previous collapse in southwest Delhi’s Satya Niketan, where a five-storey building fell on September 6, leading to seven fatalities and multiple injuries. With the frequency of such incidents raising alarm bells, the need for stringent building regulations and safety checks has become a pressing issue for authorities and citizens alike.
