Acclaimed animation director Suresh Eriyat has unveiled his latest short film, The Godawan, which artfully combines conservation themes with striking stop-motion animation and the traditional craft of Jaipur blue pottery. This unique film sheds light on the challenges faced by the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard, while also highlighting successful initiatives aimed at increasing its population.
The title The Godawan not only references the local name for the Great Indian Bustard but also relates to a whiskey brand from Diageo India, which has generously sponsored both the conservation program and the film’s production. This collaboration signifies an innovative intersection of ecology and culture, aiming to raise awareness about an avian species on the brink of extinction.
Conceived by the creative agency 22Feet and Eriyat’s Studio Eeksaurus, the film was meticulously crafted using over 5,200 handmade ceramic pieces, a process that took more than eight months to complete. The official synopsis describes the narrative as seen through the eyes of a single unhatched egg, highlighting the fragility of the species. With Great Indian Bustards laying only a single egg each year, the storytelling employs a visual language that transcends mere facts, effectively communicating the precariousness of the bird’s future.
The use of ceramics in the film serves a dual purpose; it reflects the delicate nature of the Great Indian Bustard while presenting a practical challenge in animation. Once broken, ceramics cannot be restored to their original form, paralleling the urgent need for conservation efforts for this majestic bird. The film aims to inspire audiences to appreciate the beauty of the Great Indian Bustard and understand the implications of its decline.
Through engaging storytelling and artistic expression, The Godawan seeks to foster a deeper connection between viewers and the natural world, encouraging support for conservation initiatives. As the film gains traction, it promises to be a crucial tool in spreading awareness about the importance of protecting the Great Indian Bustard and preserving India’s rich biodiversity.
