In a significant crackdown on immigration fraud, the Mumbai Police arrested six individuals believed to be undocumented Bangladeshi migrants on Friday. Reports from ANI indicate that these individuals were involved in providing counterfeit Aadhaar cards and other identity documents to assist fellow Bangladeshi nationals in illegally entering India.
The police confiscated a substantial cache of forged documents during the operation, including forty fake Aadhaar cards, Permanent Account Number (PAN) cards, and railway tickets equipped with QR codes. This operation sheds light on the ongoing challenges faced by Indian authorities in managing immigration and verifying the citizenship of individuals from neighboring countries.
The backdrop to these arrests is a heightened scrutiny of Bengali-speaking individuals in various Indian states, particularly after a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in April 2025. Following this incident, many states, predominantly governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have implemented stringent measures, leading to increased detentions of Muslim individuals who speak Bengali. Authorities are pressing these individuals to substantiate their claims of Indian citizenship, reflecting the tense socio-political climate surrounding immigration issues.
Reports have emerged of several individuals being forcibly repatriated to Bangladesh after failing to prove their citizenship, raising human rights concerns. In several instances, individuals wrongfully sent to Bangladesh have been able to return to India, highlighting the procedural inadequacies in the deportation process. The Scroll has documented various cases where individuals were returned after their Indian citizenship was re-established, underscoring the need for a more systematic approach to immigration enforcement.
In May 2025, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs directed all states and Union Territories to conduct thorough checks on people suspected of being undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh, amplifying the urgency of verifying individual credentials. This directive has led to an increase in scrutiny of Bengali-speaking populations, sparking debates about the balance between national security and civil liberties. As the situation evolves, the Mumbai police’s recent actions serve as a poignant reminder of the complex interplay between immigration policy, public safety, and human rights in India.
