The Supreme Court of India has recently taken up the case of Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, issuing a notice to the West Bengal government regarding her request for protection during her visits to her parliamentary constituency, Krishnanagar. This development comes amid allegations made by Moitra that local administrative actions are hindering essential development projects funded under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS).
On Thursday, a bench comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana called for responses from both the West Bengal and Union governments concerning Moitra’s claims. The MPLADS scheme allows MPs to recommend projects for local development, making the efficient execution of these initiatives crucial for their constituents. Moitra has pointed out that the obstruction of such projects in her constituency is a matter of concern.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the state and central governments, raised questions about the petition’s validity, arguing that if all 500 MPs across the country sought similar judicial interventions, it could lead to overwhelming challenges for the judiciary. However, the bench decided that the case warrants consideration and has given the respondents a week to submit their replies, with Moitra allowed to present her rejoinder thereafter.
The backdrop of this plea includes an incident on August 14, when Moitra alleged that the Nadia district administration instructed her to vacate the circuit house in Krishnanagar late at night, despite her having a designated room at the state-owned facility. This event has spurred her to seek legal protection as she navigates her responsibilities as an elected representative in a politically charged atmosphere.
As the situation unfolds, the Supreme Court’s involvement underscores the ongoing tensions in West Bengal’s political landscape, where local governance and development initiatives often intersect with party politics. The outcome of this case could have implications not only for Moitra but also for other MPs who may face similar challenges in performing their duties.
