In a concerning move, Instagram temporarily suspended the accounts of three independent journalists, Monika Singh, Bindu Gurjar, and Lokbhadra Singh, who were actively covering the tragic deaths of Adivasi children in Balaghat district, Madhya Pradesh. The decision to suspend their accounts came to light on Monday but was reversed by Wednesday morning, allowing the journalists to regain access to their platforms.

The trio had been documenting the ongoing protests by Adivasi communities in response to the alarming mortality rate among local children, which many attribute to systemic failures in healthcare. Their reports have shone a spotlight on the alleged mismanagement of hospitals and the challenges faced by ASHA workers, who play a crucial role in delivering healthcare services in these underprivileged regions.

Earlier reports, including one from Scroll, revealed that a mysterious outbreak of measles and malaria had gone unaddressed for over two months in Balaghat, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of at least 25 children from the Baiga and Gond tribes. These findings have raised serious questions about the efficacy of local health services and sparked outrage among grassroots organizations advocating for the rights of the Adivasi people.

The Press Club of India has publicly condemned the suspension of the journalists’ accounts, asserting that it reflects a troubling trend towards silencing those who engage in public interest journalism. They emphasized the critical role of journalists in highlighting issues that affect marginalized communities and called for an end to the intimidation of those reporting on such matters.
