Tragic Floods and Mudslides Claim 955 Lives in Nepal and China; Over 150 Indians Rescued

A catastrophic flash flood and mudslide that struck the northern regions of Nepal and China on Wednesday has resulted in a staggering death toll of 955, confirmed reports indicate. Among these fatalities, 939 occurred in Nepal, while the remaining 16 were reported across the border in China. The disaster has left more than 3,900 individuals unaccounted for in Nepal and over 500 missing in China, raising concerns about the scale of this natural calamity.

In a recent update, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced that 158 stranded Indians have been successfully rescued from the affected areas. This comes as a relief amidst the chaos, as the search continues for those missing, including 275 Indians who had been reported untraceable. The situation remains fluid, and it is uncertain if the number of missing persons has changed in the days following the disaster.

As of Monday evening, over 11,300 individuals have been rescued in Nepal, according to the country’s disaster management authority. Rescue operations are being carried out under challenging conditions, as inclement weather and difficult access hinder efforts. Ambassador Naveen Srivastava of India in Nepal shared details of the ongoing operations, highlighting the collaboration between Indian technical teams and the Nepali Army at the Chilime and Langtang sites.

The floods originated in Rasuwa district, which lies approximately 120 kilometers north of Kathmandu, close to the Nepal-China border. This mountainous region was caught off guard as residents had not received any warnings, given that no rainfall was reported in the area prior to the disaster. The suddenness of the event has raised questions about the preparedness of the local authorities and the need for improved early warning systems in such vulnerable regions.
