Former Indian Diplomat Ramesh Chander Asked to Confirm Citizenship Amid Electoral Roll Review in Punjab

In an unusual turn of events, former Indian diplomat Ramesh Chander has been summoned by electoral authorities in Punjab to provide proof of his citizenship as part of a special intensive revision of the electoral rolls. The 75-year-old, who has a notable career serving as India’s ambassador to Belarus and consul general in Edinburgh, expressed surprise at the request, particularly given his long history of voting in Jalandhar.

Chander’s predicament comes to light as he was reportedly asked to present documentation verifying his residency at a government office this Thursday. Despite having already submitted his Aadhaar card and voter identity card to a booth-level officer in Jalandhar, the electoral team deemed his submitted documentation insufficient. This has raised questions about the ongoing verification process and its implications on voter eligibility.

The notice, issued by the additional electoral registration officer of Jalandhar West, noted discrepancies between Chander’s voter details and those recorded on the electoral rolls used prior to the special revision. According to reports, Chander has participated in numerous elections, including the recent 2022 Punjab Assembly elections and the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls, posing a challenge to the rationale behind the requirement for additional proof.

In defense of the electoral verification process, Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Varjeet Walia clarified that the notice was a standard procedure aimed at ensuring the accuracy of voter records. He acknowledged that a small percentage of voters, similar to Chander, have been flagged for review, emphasizing that the exercise is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the electoral system.
