In a significant turn of events, Neha Bora, a prominent student leader, and Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, have been detained during separate protests in Delhi. Bora was apprehended while participating in a flash demonstration organized by the All India Students’ Association near Barakhamba Road. The rally aimed to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, reflecting widespread discontent with the Election Commission’s operational integrity.
Dipke’s detention occurred as he was en route to Connaught Place for a planned political campaign titled “Lehra Do Tiranga,” which was set to take place at 5 PM. The campaign was intended as a show of solidarity, wherein activists would wave the national flag in response to the recent arrests of several Cockroach Janta Party leaders, including Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das, and Ajinkya Shinde. These individuals had been taken into custody earlier for trespassing when they entered the Jantar Mantar area, which had been denotified as a protest site just hours prior.
Ranka and Das remain in judicial custody, while Shinde has been released on a personal bond. The unrest comes against the backdrop of ongoing protests across Delhi and other regions of India, which began on October 2. These demonstrations express concerns over the Election Commission’s handling of the intensive revision of electoral rolls, raising questions about its transparency and fairness.
Adding to the tension, reports have emerged of women alleging instances of sexual harassment while being detained during these protests. Eyewitness accounts suggest that some women were groped and pushed by law enforcement officials, further igniting public outrage and calls for accountability from the government.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has also weighed in, demanding clarifications from the Union government regarding the recent visit of US official Marco Rubio to Mumbai. The political implications of this visit, juxtaposed with the protests against the Election Commission, have stirred a complex narrative in the public sphere, making it a focal point of discussion among political analysts and citizens alike.
