Bangladesh Deliberates on Tarique Rahman’s Upcoming India Visit Amid Extradition Tensions

Bangladesh remains in a state of indecision regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s potential visit to India next month, as confirmed by his office on Friday. AAM Saleh Shibly, the Press Secretary to Prime Minister Rahman, emphasized that no formal decision has been reached regarding the visit. The Bangladesh government is currently awaiting a response from India concerning its request for the extradition of Hasina, who has faced various charges during her political career.

Rahman’s visit could coincide with the upcoming BRICS summit scheduled for September 12-13 in New Delhi. The BRICS group includes major economies such as India, Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa, and is viewed by Washington as a potential counterbalance to American economic influence. Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman earlier indicated to The Daily Star that no conclusions had been drawn regarding either invitation, highlighting the complex diplomatic landscape in which these discussions are taking place.

The situation has become increasingly intricate, especially in light of an email from the Rashtrapati Bhavan that has raised further questions about the status of these invitations.
