Savarkar’s Grandnephew Claims Nathuram Godse Was an RSS Member in Pune Court Testimony

In a significant revelation during ongoing legal proceedings, Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, testified in a Pune court that both his maternal grandfather Gopal Godse and Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, were active participants in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). This assertion was made during the cross-examination phase of a criminal defamation case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

The RSS, which is regarded as the ideological foundation of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has historically maintained that Nathuram Godse distanced himself from the organization prior to the assassination of Gandhi in 1948. However, Satyaki Savarkar’s statements challenge this narrative, as he confirmed in court that both Gopal Godse and Vinayak Savarkar were implicated in the conspiracy to assassinate Gandhi.

Gopal Godse, who is Nathuram’s younger brother, was convicted for his involvement in the assassination conspiracy and served an 18-year prison sentence. In contrast, Vinayak Savarkar was acquitted due to insufficient evidence against him. This latest testimony adds a new layer to the ongoing discourse around the RSS and its historical figures, particularly in light of the Congress party’s criticism of the organization.

The defamation case was initiated by Satyaki Savarkar in April 2023, following comments made by Rahul Gandhi during an event in London in March 2023. Gandhi allegedly made disparaging remarks about Satyaki Savarkar’s uncle, prompting legal action. Furthermore, Satyaki Savarkar has now requested the Pune court to mandate the collection of a voice sample from Gandhi to verify the authenticity of his statements during that event.
