Bombay High Court Suspends Life Sentence and Grants Bail to Convicted Murderer of Activist Narendra Dabholkar

The Bombay High Court has granted bail to Sachin Andure, one of the convicts in the high-profile murder case of anti-superstition activist Narendra Dabholkar. The court’s decision, announced on Tuesday, also suspended his life sentence. This ruling comes nearly three months after another convict, Sharad Kalaskar, was similarly granted bail.

Andure was implicated in the assassination of Dabholkar, who was shot dead in Pune in August 2013. His murder sparked widespread outrage and drew attention to the rising violence against rationalists and activists in India. Following Dabholkar’s assassination, notable figures such as Govind Pansare, Gauri Lankesh, and M.M. Kalburgi were also killed in a series of attacks that highlighted a troubling trend of targeting dissenters in the country.

In May 2024, a sessions court found both Andure and Kalaskar guilty of Dabholkar’s murder, sentencing them to life imprisonment. However, the court acquitted them of charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, prompting an appeal from Dabholkar’s daughter, Mukta, against this acquittal. She is also contesting the decision to clear the other three accused: Virendrasingh Tawade, Vikram Bhave, and Sanjeev Punalekar.

The detailed verdict from Justices Sarang Kotwal and Ranjitsinha Bhonsale has not yet been made public, leaving many awaiting the specifics of the court’s reasoning. The case continues to be pivotal in the discourse surrounding freedom of expression and the protection of activists in India.
