In a tragic turn of events, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck eastern Indonesia early Saturday morning, leading to the loss of at least 38 lives and injuring numerous others. The earthquake, which occurred at 5:58 AM local time, had its epicenter 68 kilometers northwest of Ende city, within the Flores region, and was recorded at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake was followed by tsunami warnings, with waves of less than 3 feet reported in various coastal areas of Indonesia. However, the tsunami alert was revoked roughly three hours after the earthquake, as officials assessed the situation. According to Suharyanto, the head of Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency, as of 3 PM local time, the fatalities stood at 38, with two individuals suffering serious injuries and another 11 sustaining minor wounds. Approximately 2,000 residents were forced to evacuate to safer locations.
Among the casualties, 16 bodies were recovered from a landslide in the village of Reok, located within the Manggarai region. The tremors were felt strongly across East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, and parts of South Sulawesi, with many locals describing shaking that lasted up to a minute. As reported by local authorities, the vast majority of residents reacted promptly, evacuating their homes and seeking safety in open areas.
This earthquake comes as Indonesia continues to grapple with its geological vulnerability, being situated on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire,’ an area known for frequent seismic activity. The country has a long history of devastating earthquakes and tsunamis, making disaster preparedness and response vital components of its national strategy. The government’s disaster management teams were immediately deployed to assess the damage and provide aid to the affected communities.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, the government has urged residents to remain vigilant and to heed safety advisories. Public health officials have also been mobilized to deal with potential health crises arising from the disaster. As recovery efforts are underway, the nation mourns the loss of life and seeks to provide support to those impacted by this devastating natural disaster.
