Transport Ministry Orders Ride-Hailing Apps to Eliminate Pre-Ride Tipping Features

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a directive to ride-hailing services across the country, mandating the removal of tipping prompts that appear before a passenger books a ride. This decision, reported by the Deccan Herald, is part of the enforcement of the 2025 Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, which emphasize that tipping should only be an option after the completion of the trip.

Many popular vehicle aggregator platforms currently feature prompts that encourage riders to tip drivers prior to their journey. These prompts often include terms like ‘Advance Tip’ or ‘Choose an Add-on,’ with some platforms suggesting that tipping in advance could expedite ride acceptance or improve service quality. The ministry’s recent instructions aim to curb this practice, highlighting that such features not only breach the established guidelines but also create an unfair expectation for drivers.

According to the ministry’s announcement, these applications must refrain from displaying any features or messages that imply that an upfront payment could lead to a quicker ride confirmation or a higher likelihood of driver acceptance. The guidelines are designed to protect both passengers and drivers, ensuring that tips are offered based on service quality following the ride rather than as a prerequisite for securing a ride.
