A devastating incident occurred in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, where six workers tragically lost their lives following an influx of water and debris in a tunnel under construction for a hydroelectric project. The unfortunate event unfolded on Thursday evening, prompting immediate rescue efforts.
The tunnel, part of the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project owned by the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation, was being constructed by the Hindustan Construction Company. At the time of the incident, 22 workers were trapped inside, with 16 being successfully rescued as confirmed by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on social media.
Reports indicate that the incident was first noted around 7:05 PM, triggering a prompt response from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Teams from the Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, and the National Disaster Response Force also joined the rescue operation, showcasing a concerted effort to save those trapped. Police and the Central Industrial Security Force were also on-site, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. Vinod Kumar Suman, Secretary of the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, mentioned that additional teams would be deployed if necessary.
This tragic event comes on the heels of adverse weather conditions, as the Chamoli region has been experiencing heavy rainfall for several days. The relentless downpour has caused significant infrastructure challenges, including a bridge in the Niti Valley being swept away by strong river currents earlier in the week. Such incidents highlight the pressing need for enhanced safety measures at construction sites, particularly in regions prone to natural calamities.
The loss of life in this incident has raised concerns about worker safety and the operational protocols in place at construction sites. Families of the deceased workers are likely to seek answers and accountability, while authorities face the challenge of preventing similar tragedies in the future. As rescue operations continue, the focus will also be on ensuring that the survivors receive the necessary support and medical care.
