Supreme Court Denies Mahua Moitra’s Request for Virtual Appearance in Provocative Remarks Case

The Supreme Court of India has turned down a plea by Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, who sought permission to appear virtually before the police regarding a case linked to comments she made that were deemed provocative. The court’s decision comes in the backdrop of an incident on July 1, where eggs and vegetables were thrown at a TMC office in Krishnanagar, West Bengal, while Moitra was present inside.

Moitra has accused members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the attack, which she claims was politically motivated. Following the incident, she took to social media to announce her intent to file a police complaint against those responsible for the assault, further escalating the tensions between the political factions in the state. In a controversial video, Moitra suggested that those who wished to throw eggs at her should disguise themselves in a burqa to conceal their identities, remarks that have since attracted significant backlash.

The situation escalated when a BJP leader lodged a formal complaint against Moitra, alleging that her comments offended the sentiments of the Hindu community. This has led to a complex legal battle, with the Calcutta High Court initially granting her interim protection from arrest until October 5, provided she complied with appearing before the investigating officer by August 14.

During the Supreme Court hearings, Moitra’s advocate, Gopal Sankarnarayan, expressed that while she was willing to cooperate with the police investigation, she preferred to do so virtually due to concerns about her safety and the ongoing political tensions. However, Justice Dipankar Datta responded, questioning whether her status as a Member of Parliament warranted special treatment in such circumstances.
