The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet implicating two members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the murder of Chandranath Rath, an aide to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The incident, which occurred near Kolkata on May 6, just two days after the assembly election results were announced, has raised serious concerns about political violence in the state.
According to sources quoted by PTI, the chargesheet includes a total of 11 individuals, with BJP workers Sagar Sonkar and Sahib Sonkar identified as key suspects. The brothers were arrested on August 1 and are believed to have played a significant role in orchestrating Rath’s murder. Sagar Sonkar, who had previously collaborated with Rath, is alleged to have financed the assassination by hiring shooters from Uttar Pradesh.
This shocking development comes at a time when political tensions are high in West Bengal, a state known for its turbulent political history. Adhikari, who took office as Chief Minister on May 9, has labeled the murder a “pre-planned” attack, exacerbating the already strained relations between rival political factions. The CBI took over the investigation on May 12 and has since apprehended a total of 11 individuals, including six alleged contract killers.
Prior to his affiliation with the BJP, Sagar Sonkar was associated with a legislator from a rival party until 2020. His transition to the BJP and subsequent involvement in this case have raised eyebrows, prompting questions about the intertwining of criminal elements with political affiliations in the state. The investigation into Rath’s murder has highlighted the ongoing struggles for power among various political entities in West Bengal.
As the CBI continues to probe this high-profile case, the implications of political violence and its impact on the state’s governance remain a pressing issue. With the spotlight firmly on the BJP and its members, it remains to be seen how this case will unfold and what ramifications it may have for the party’s standing in West Bengal’s turbulent political landscape.
