Principal of Jaipur School for Hearing and Speech-Impaired Students Suspended Amid Protests Over Poor Facilities

The Rajasthan Education Department has taken decisive action following a protest by hearing and speech-impaired students at a government school in Jaipur, leading to the suspension of the school’s principal. The incident underscores ongoing issues related to inadequate infrastructure and essential services at the Government Seth Anandilal Poddar Senior Secondary School, which caters to students with disabilities.

On Wednesday, more than 100 students rallied outside the school premises, using sign language, placards, and written messages to express their grievances. They highlighted that their numerous complaints regarding the school’s mismanagement had largely been ignored. The students described the school’s toilets as unsanitary, criticized the scarcity of drinking water, and pointed out serious structural problems such as cracked walls in classrooms and a generally deteriorating building.

Moreover, the students raised alarming concerns about the quality of food served in the school’s hostel. Some claimed that they were charged for phone calls to their parents and for medical assistance when they fell ill. They further noted a significant shortage of teachers who are proficient in Indian Sign Language, which hampers effective communication and learning opportunities for these students. The protest was spurred by a recent incident where plaster from the classroom ceiling fell and injured a student, amplifying the urgency of their demands.

The situation escalated when students accused a male staff member of inappropriate behavior towards female students, further contributing to an atmosphere of fear and discomfort. The school, which serves a total of 583 students, including 282 residing in the hostel, has been under scrutiny, leading to an inspection by educational authorities after the protest. The district education officer subsequently submitted a report recommending disciplinary measures against those responsible for the alleged mismanagement.

In response to these developments, the principal, Bharat Joshi, has been suspended pending further investigation. This incident not only highlights the pressing need for improvements in educational facilities for differently-abled students but also raises broader questions about the support systems and resources available to them across the country. As the education sector grapples with such challenges, the hope is that this incident will prompt necessary reforms ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment for all students.
