India Repatriates 274 Fugitives from 36 Countries Since 2019, Reveals Home Ministry

The Indian government has successfully repatriated a total of 274 fugitives from various countries since 2019, according to a recent announcement by the Ministry of Home Affairs. This significant operation, which reflects the country’s commitment to justice and law enforcement, has seen individuals accused of serious crimes brought back to face legal proceedings in India.

Out of the total repatriated fugitives, a considerable number were involved in heinous crimes. The Ministry reported that 62 individuals were wanted for violent offenses, including murder and robbery. Additionally, 53 were accused of sexual crimes, with some being charged under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). Furthermore, 17 fugitives were linked to terrorist activities, highlighting the ongoing challenge of combating extremism, while 16 faced charges related to drug offenses as stipulated in the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

The statistics provided by the Home Ministry also revealed a pattern in repatriation numbers over the years. In 2019, nine fugitives were brought back, while the following year saw a decline with just seven repatriations. The numbers began to pick up again in 2021, with 23 individuals being repatriated, followed by an increase to 40 in 2022. This year, 37 fugitives have already been returned to India.

The Home Ministry noted that over the last three years, Interpol has issued Red Corner notices for 401 fugitives. These notices serve as international alerts aimed at locating and detaining individuals who have fled justice by escaping to foreign territories. They request law enforcement agencies in Interpol’s 195 member countries to assist in the apprehension of these wanted persons, thus facilitating their return to face legal proceedings.

This ongoing effort by the Indian government underscores its dedication to ensuring that fugitives cannot evade justice by seeking refuge abroad. As global cooperation in law enforcement continues to evolve, India’s proactive measures highlight its resolve to uphold the rule of law and protect its citizens from criminal activities both domestically and internationally.
