In a fiery address in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of permitting the shooting of students during recent nationwide protests. Gandhi, who serves as the Leader of Opposition, asserted that Shah had granted permission for the aggressive measures taken against the demonstrators, calling the actions a grave injustice against the youth of India.
During his speech, Gandhi stated, “He put the pellets into the blood of our students. He ordered the students of India to be shot.” His remarks came in the wake of widespread protests led by students across the country, who were voicing their concerns on various pressing issues. The protests have often been met with strong police action, raising questions about the government’s approach to dissent.
The Lok Sabha session was marked by a heated exchange following Gandhi’s comments. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju responded by demanding that Gandhi either retract his statement or provide evidence to support his claims. Rijiju emphasized the need for decorum in the House, stating that such serious allegations could not go unchallenged. Speaker Om Birla intervened, reminding members that all statements made in Parliament must be substantiated by facts, cautioning against making unverified claims.
Gandhi took a stand, asserting that it is solely the prerogative of the Home Minister or the Prime Minister to authorize the use of force. He further criticized Shah’s absence from the House, suggesting that the Home Minister was avoiding tough questions posed by the student community and their representatives. This absence, according to Gandhi, reflected a lack of accountability from the government regarding the treatment of protesting students.
The uproar in Lok Sabha highlights the escalating tensions between the ruling party and the opposition over the management of dissent and civil liberties in India. The protests have underscored a growing discontent among the youth regarding various government policies, and allegations of excessive use of force by law enforcement have raised serious concerns about human rights and the right to protest in the country.
