The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified its ongoing investigation into the financial dealings of Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group by attaching additional assets worth Rs 1,021 crore. This recent action brings the total assets frozen in relation to the conglomerate’s alleged money laundering activities to an alarming Rs 20,367 crore under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), alongside Rs 77.86 crore under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
The investigation stems from two first information reports (FIRs) filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) back in September 2022. These FIRs are focused on substantial loans provided by Yes Bank to Reliance Home Finance Limited and Reliance Commercial Finance Limited, which reportedly amounted to approximately Rs 3,000 crore between 2017 and 2019. It is alleged that these funds were illicitly funneled into shell companies and subsidiaries that belong to the Reliance Group, indicating a potential scheme to misappropriate the funds.
In July 2025, the ED escalated its investigation, conducting raids across more than 35 locations and scrutinizing the operations of 50 companies and 25 individuals linked to the case. The agency claims that an astonishing Rs 15,548 crore in public funds raised by both Reliance Home Finance and Reliance Commercial Finance was rerouted through a complex web of shell companies and group firms controlled by the Ambani-led conglomerate.
This latest development has sparked widespread discussions regarding the financial practices of prominent Indian corporations and the accountability mechanisms in place for large financial institutions. The magnitude of the amounts involved not only raises questions about corporate governance but also highlights the urgent need for regulatory oversight in the financial sector. Analysts are keeping a close eye on the unfolding case, as it might set significant precedents for future cases involving corporate malfeasance.
As the ED continues its investigation, many are watching closely to see how the legal proceedings will evolve and what repercussions they may hold for Reliance Group and its leadership. The outcome could have far-reaching implications for investor confidence and the broader Indian economy, especially in the context of corporate governance and financial ethics.
