A Delhi court has formally charged Lalu Prasad Yadav, the chief of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), along with his wife Rabri Devi and son Tejashwi Yadav, in a significant money laundering case tied to alleged malpractices during his tenure as the Minister of Railways from 2004 to 2009. The charges stem from irregularities concerning the leasing of two hotels operated by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
The case revolves around a tender process that purportedly saw manipulation by officials to secure leases for hotels located in Ranchi and Puri. It has been reported that directors of the companies that acquired these leases allegedly facilitated the transfer of a land parcel in Patna to Sarla Gupta, an associate of Lalu Yadav. Subsequent to this transaction, Gupta is said to have transferred her shares in the companies to Rabri Devi for a nominal fee, raising eyebrows over the legality and ethics of those dealings.
Special Judge Vishal Gogne of the Rouse Avenue Courts issued the order framing the charges under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. During the proceedings, the court noted the existence of substantial suspicion regarding the misuse of authority, as well as the potential financial gains accrued by Rabri Devi and Tejashwi Yadav from these arrangements. The judge emphasized that the accused continue to possess what has been described as “tainted land” in Patna, underscoring the ongoing implications of the allegations.
In addition to the Yadav family, Sarla Gupta and her husband Prem Chand Gupta, a former Union minister, have also been implicated in this case. The framing of formal charges is scheduled for October 3, which will further clarify the legal trajectory of this high-profile case that has captured public attention.
This case is particularly notable as it intertwines politics with alleged financial misconduct, reflecting a broader narrative around accountability and corruption in Indian governance. The developments will likely resonate across the political landscape, especially considering the prominence of the individuals involved and their influence within Bihar’s political framework.
