The announcement of a public holiday in West Bengal on July 6 to mark the birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mukherjee has once again brought his life and legacy into public discussion. Syama Prasad Mukherjee was the son of Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, one of India’s most celebrated educationists, jurists, and mathematicians. Revered as the “Tiger of Bengal,” Sir Ashutosh earned this title for his exceptional scholarship, fearless personality, and unwavering commitment to academic excellence and justice.

A distinguished mathematician, barrister, judge, and multiple-term Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, Sir Ashutosh played a transformative role in the development of higher education in Bengal. A popular anecdote associated with Sir Ashutosh tells of a train journey during the British era in which an English official allegedly threw his shoes off the train. In response, Sir Ashutosh is said to have thrown the official’s coat out of the train, later remarking that the coat had gone in search of his shoes. Although historians have not conclusively verified this story, it remains a widely circulated symbol of his courage and self-respect.
