The Delhi Gymkhana Club, a prestigious establishment in the heart of the national capital, has been served an eviction notice by the Union government, prompting a significant turn of events for the venerable institution. The notice, conveyed through the Land and Development Office, requires the club to justify why it should not be evicted from its expansive 27.3-acre premises.
According to reports, the show-cause notice was dispatched on Monday, with club representatives summoned to appear before officials on July 7. Should the club fail to respond or attend the hearing, the government may take unilateral action, proceeding without further input from the club’s representatives, as indicated by sources.
Established as one of Delhi’s oldest exclusive social and sporting venues, the Delhi Gymkhana Club has long been a favored haunt for diplomats, bureaucrats, and military personnel. Its strategic location near the Prime Minister’s residence and other critical government installations adds to its significance. The government has stated that the premises are required for essential purposes, including the strengthening of defense infrastructure and other public security needs.
This recent eviction notice follows a previous directive issued on May 22, in which the Land and Development Office mandated the club to vacate the premises promptly. In response, the Delhi Gymkhana Club sought legal recourse, filing a petition with the Delhi High Court on May 25. While the court declined to grant immediate relief, it did allow for the examination of claims made by club members and employees against the government’s order.
The unfolding situation raises questions regarding the future of the club and its members, who have enjoyed the privileges of this historic establishment for generations. As the deadline approaches for the club to respond to the eviction notice, the spotlight remains firmly on the potential implications for not only the club itself but also its esteemed clientele and the surrounding community.
