The opposition coalition known as the INDIA bloc has formally demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, citing a significant setback for countless youth who took the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions. This demand was articulated during a press conference held on Monday, where Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, along with other prominent leaders of the alliance such as Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee, articulated their concerns over the recent controversies surrounding educational assessments.
Kharge accused the minister of presiding over a ‘betrayal of lakhs of youth,’ following the cancellation of the NEET exam that was originally conducted on May 3 due to allegations of a paper leak. Over 22 lakh candidates had appeared for the examination, and the National Testing Agency’s decision to annul it on May 12 has raised questions about the integrity of the assessment process. A retest is now scheduled for June 21, but the move has already drawn ire from students and parents alike.
In addition to the NEET controversy, the INDIA bloc leaders also expressed grave concerns regarding the ongoing revision of electoral rolls, which they plan to challenge in the Supreme Court. Kharge accused the ruling government of engaging in ‘vote loot’ and ‘stealing of elections,’ emphasizing the need for an all-party meeting to address pressing national issues, including economic challenges, rising unemployment, inflation, and the plight of farmers.
The alliance has shown a commitment to regular coordination, with plans to meet every two months to strategize and strengthen their parliamentary presence. They aim to present a united front against the government’s handling of various crises, particularly in the education sector, which they believe has been mishandled by the current administration.
As discussions continue over the integrity of academic assessments, the INDIA bloc is positioning itself as a voice for those affected by these controversies, particularly the youth who are facing uncertainty in their educational and professional futures.
