Retired Justice Gautam Shirish Patel of the Bombay High Court is currently under significant threat, with reports indicating that he and his family are being targeted for his ruling in a high-profile succession case involving the Dawoodi Bohra community. Since August, both in India and the United Kingdom, the family has encountered a disturbing series of threats and acts of intimidation linked to his controversial decision.
The situation escalated most recently on a Friday when Aditi Patel, the daughter of Justice Patel, received an anonymous and menacing letter. This correspondence contained chilling warnings about the “cremation of you and your family” if they did not adhere to previous ultimatums. The letter purportedly originated from a fake address in London and included a German stamp, suggesting a calculated effort to instill fear. Adding to the eerie nature of the communication, it was accompanied by a memory card, which Hertfordshire police have since secured, as the family opted to avoid potential malware threats by not opening it.
The threats stem from Justice Patel’s ruling on April 22, 2024, concerning the succession of leadership within the Dawoodi Bohra community, a prominent sect within Shia Islam known for its close-knit structure and hierarchy. The judgement has reportedly caused significant unrest within the community, leading to an ongoing campaign of intimidation against the judge and his relatives, who are based in both Mumbai and London. Reports indicate that the threats began surfacing in August 2025, with demands for Justice Patel to publicly recant his decision via a video on YouTube, a request he has steadfastly refused.
This situation highlights the precarious balance judges often have to maintain between legal rulings and the social implications of their decisions in a diverse society. The Dawoodi Bohra community, while known for its progressive stance on various issues, has also faced internal conflicts regarding leadership succession. The aftermath of this ruling raises questions about the safety of legal authorities and their families when faced with backlash from powerful community factions.
As investigations continue, the family’s safety remains a primary concern, with law enforcement agencies involved in ensuring their protection. The threats against Justice Patel are not only a personal affront but also a significant commentary on the climate surrounding judicial independence in India, where the repercussions of high-stakes legal decisions can extend far beyond the courtroom.
