Union Home Minister Amit Shah has clarified that the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will not be applicable to Adivasi communities, ensuring that their rights, customs, and traditions remain untouched. Speaking at the Janjati Suraksha Samagam held in Delhi on Sunday, Shah addressed concerns regarding the potential impact of the UCC on tribal traditions.
During his address, Shah emphasized that there is a misconception being propagated that the UCC would undermine the cultural practices of Scheduled Tribe communities. “As the home minister in the Narendra Modi government, I assure you that the UCC will not apply to any tribal areas or individuals. It will not infringe upon tribal rights,” he stated firmly.
The UCC aims to establish a unified set of laws governing personal matters like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption for all citizens, moving away from the current system where such matters are governed by community-specific laws derived from religious texts. Shah highlighted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already implemented the UCC in states like Uttarakhand and Gujarat, where provisions were made specifically to protect Adivasi interests.
This announcement comes amidst ongoing debates about the UCC in India, with various stakeholders expressing differing opinions. Supporters argue that a common legal framework would promote equality and justice, while critics warn that it could erode cultural identities, particularly of marginal communities like the Adivasis.
Shah’s remarks were aimed at reassuring tribal leaders and communities that their unique customs will not be jeopardized under the UCC’s implementation. His comments were made at an event organized by the Janjati Suraksha Manch and the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, both affiliated with the RSS, which plays a significant role in shaping the BJP’s policies.
