Central Forces Deployment in West Bengal Extended Until June 20 Amid Security Concerns

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the extension of the deployment of 500 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in West Bengal until June 20, 2024. This decision comes at the request of the state government, which has been keen on ensuring security in the region following recent electoral tensions.

A standard company of Central Armed Police Forces comprises approximately 100 to 150 personnel. In total, the deployment includes 200 companies from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), 150 from the Border Security Force (BSF), and 50 each from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). This measure aims primarily to assist local law enforcement in maintaining public order, especially in areas deemed sensitive after the state Assembly elections.

Following the elections held on May 4, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious and ended the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) 15-year governance, the state has experienced heightened security concerns. The West Bengal government has expressed the need for an extended presence of central forces to maintain law and order and prevent any potential unrest. An unnamed official from the state government emphasized that this deployment would ensure stability and counteract any threats in vulnerable regions.

The coordination between the state police and CAPFs is expected to enhance security measures significantly. The ongoing collaboration is crucial, especially in the wake of the competitive political landscape and the potential for unrest.
