Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam Appeals to Congress for Government Formation in Tamil Nadu

In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has formally sought support from the Congress party to establish a government following the recent state elections. Congress MP KC Venugopal confirmed this request on Tuesday, underscoring that the party’s leadership has tasked its Tamil Nadu unit with evaluating this appeal in light of the sentiments expressed by voters during the electoral process.

During its inaugural election, TVK emerged as the single-largest party, securing a total of 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. However, the party fell short of the crucial majority threshold of 118 seats, necessitating collaboration with other political factions to form a viable government. The Congress party, which contested the elections as part of a coalition with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), managed to win five seats. The DMK, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, claimed 59 seats, while the National Democratic Alliance, which includes the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), captured 53 seats.

In addition to the Congress and DMK, other parties that were part of the Secular Progressive Alliance, namely the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), each secured two seats. These results indicate a fragmented political landscape in Tamil Nadu, compelling parties to negotiate alliances to ensure governance.

Venugopal emphasized that the Congress party recognizes the electorate’s desire for a secular government that is dedicated to upholding constitutional values. He remarked that the party is keen on preventing the BJP or its affiliates from influencing the state’s administration. This commitment reflects the broader political dynamics in Tamil Nadu, where secularism and regional pride often dictate electoral outcomes.
