West Bengal Election Update: 1,468 Voter Names Restored Ahead of Phase Two Polls

In a significant development ahead of the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, appellate tribunals have reinstated 1,468 names to the electoral rolls. This decision was made as part of the special intensive revision process on Tuesday, just a day before voters head to the polls. Reports indicate that this move aims to ensure that a larger segment of the populace can participate in the democratic process.

According to a report by The Indian Express, the appellate tribunals also noted that six names were not added to the electoral lists. Of these, five individuals belong to the Muslim community, while one is identified as a Hindu woman. This information was provided by the Kolkata-based Sabar Institute, which focuses on electoral research and advocacy.

An official from the Election Commission confirmed that the newly added electors would be eligible to vote on Wednesday. The official stated, “The polling station-wise names of voters, whose names have been included or deleted, has been uploaded on the website.” This transparency is seen as a crucial step towards maintaining public trust in the electoral process. Political parties, candidates, returning officers, and district election officers are also set to receive updated lists to keep them informed.

Despite this progress, questions remain regarding the tribunal’s capacity to process additional appeals before the second phase of polling commences. Earlier reports indicated that the 19 appellate tribunals received a staggering 34 lakh applications for electoral roll revisions. Among these, approximately seven lakh were seeking exclusion from the voter lists, while the remaining 27 lakh were appeals for inclusion.

The West Bengal elections have been a focal point of political activity, with various parties vying for influence in a state known for its vibrant political landscape.
