New FIR Filed Against Ex-TMC MLA in Kolkata Doctor’s Controversial Cremation Case

The West Bengal Police have initiated a fresh first information report (FIR) against three individuals, including former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Nirmal Ghosh, in relation to the alleged hasty cremation of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. The move follows a directive from West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who ordered the police to reopen investigations into the matter after significant public outcry.

This latest development comes on the heels of Chief Minister Adhikari’s remarks during a gathering commemorating the second death anniversary of the doctor. He stated that the cremation was initially planned to take place after two others but was unexpectedly expedited, causing distress among the family members. The doctor’s mother, Ratna Debnath, who is currently serving as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Panihati, attended the event where these claims were made, highlighting the political undertones surrounding this tragic incident.

The FIR was lodged at the Khardah police station following a formal complaint by the doctor’s father, which was submitted to the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate. The report names Ghosh, along with Somnath Dey, a former municipal chairman and TMC leader, and local resident Sanjib Mukherjee. These individuals have been charged with offenses that include wrongful restraint, tampering with evidence, and trespassing on funeral sites, according to a police officer who wished to remain anonymous.
