Clashes Erupt in Ranchi as Protesters Demand Action on Exam Irregularities

In a tense situation in Ranchi, Jharkhand, several protesters sustained injuries when police resorted to lathi-charge and deployed tear gas during a rally aimed at highlighting alleged irregularities in government job examinations. The protest, which saw students gathering at the old Assembly complex in Dhurwa, was met with police resistance nearly three kilometers from the Assembly building. Among the protesters was Devendra Nath Mahto, a student leader who has been on a hunger strike for the past nine days; he participated in the march from an ambulance, underscoring the intensity of the situation.

As the crowd advanced, they managed to break through multiple layers of barricades, inching closer to the Vidhan Sabha, where the day’s proceedings were subsequently adjourned. The protests were fueled by widespread dissatisfaction over the handling of national competitive examinations, which have been a hot-button issue in recent months across India.

This wave of protests in Jharkhand began on July 25, mirroring nationwide discontent with perceived mismanagement in the examination process, which many students believe has unfairly impacted their career prospects.
