Jharkhand Students Demand Answer as JPSC Exam Results Spark Widespread Protests

On the evening of July 31, a wave of discontent surged among young aspirants at the Jaipal Singh Munda stadium in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Their chants of “Radd karo, radd karo!” (Cancel, cancel!) echoed through the air, a collective demand for the annulment of the results from the fourteenth Combined Civil Services Examination conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC). This protest, which began on July 25, has brought together students from across the state out of shared grievances regarding alleged irregularities in the examination process.

The JPSC exam, intended to fill several key government positions including police superintendents and deputy collectors, saw its preliminary test conducted in April. Results were published on July 2, revealing 2,204 candidates shortlisted for the main examinations scheduled for July. However, these main exams have since been postponed pending an investigation ordered by the state government, a decision that has come as a relief to the protesters demanding justice.

This is not the first instance of public outcry regarding the JPSC examinations. Early July witnessed protests organized by opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All Jharkhand Students Union Party (AJSUP), which raised concerns about the integrity of the examination process. Yet, the protests gained significant momentum towards the end of July, transcending political affiliations as a diverse group of youth united against perceived injustices affecting their future.

The ongoing agitation highlights the broader issue of youth unemployment and the struggles aspirants face in securing government jobs in Jharkhand. Many students invest years of rigorous preparation for competitive exams, often at the expense of their personal and professional lives.
