Rajya Sabha Chairman Urges Centre to Heed Opposition’s Call for Amit Shah’s Presence

In a significant development in the ongoing Monsoon Session, Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan has urged the Central government to take into account the Opposition’s plea for Union Home Minister Amit Shah to appear in the House. This request comes amidst rising tensions and calls for accountability related to a recent crackdown on youth protesters in Delhi.

During discussions with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Radhakrishnan expressed the need to convey the sentiments of the Opposition to the Home Minister. The Opposition is adamant that Shah should provide a detailed statement regarding the use of force by security personnel during the protests that erupted on July 20. The incident, which saw widespread unrest, has led to increased scrutiny over law enforcement’s methods, particularly as the Delhi Police and Central Armed Forces operate under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

As the session commenced on Thursday, Members of the Opposition vociferously chanted slogans demanding Shah’s presence, insisting, “Amit Shah must answer, come to the House.” This chorus of dissent reflects the collective frustration among opposition parties regarding their demand for transparency and accountability from the government.

In response to the uproar, Minister Rijiju cited two parliamentary rules—235, which relates to curtailing disruptions, and 240, which addresses irrelevant or repetitive statements. He claimed that Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House, had been reiterating similar remarks daily. This comment triggered further protests from the Opposition, leading to a brief adjournment of the House.

Upon the resumption of proceedings during the Question Hour, Kharge firmly stated that he does not require lessons on parliamentary conduct from Rijiju. This exchange underscores the contentious atmosphere currently prevailing in Parliament, as the Opposition seeks to hold the government accountable while navigating the complexities of legislative procedures.
