Supreme Court Urges Authorities to Address Youth Concerns Amid Nationwide Protests

The Supreme Court of India emphasized the need for authorities to actively listen to and understand the grievances of young protesters during a recent hearing. This statement came as a response to ongoing demonstrations against perceived irregularities in the examination process, which have been escalating since early June.

Chief Justice Surya Kant remarked, “We must tread cautiously to prevent these young individuals from resorting to violence.” His comments were made while addressing a petition filed by retired Air Force officers seeking legal action against the organizers of the protests that have gained momentum across the country. The Chief Justice advocated for dialogue as a means to resolve tensions, stating, “The most effective tool is listening—understanding their concerns is crucial.”

The protests originated on June 6 when members of the Cockroach Janta Party rallied at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of then Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The unrest intensified on July 20 as thousands joined the call for accountability regarding the management of competitive examinations. The situation worsened when police took activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was on a hunger strike for three weeks, into custody for medical care, further fueling public outrage.

As protesters attempted to march towards Parliament, they encountered heavy police resistance. Law enforcement officials resorted to using batons, tear gas, and pellet guns to disperse the crowds, leading to numerous injuries and escalating the protests into a nationwide movement. The violent suppression of demonstrations has contributed to a surge in public sentiment against the government’s handling of educational affairs, with many students feeling that their voices are not being heard.

In light of the escalating situation, the Supreme Court’s call for understanding and mediation reflects a growing recognition of the importance of addressing young people’s concerns in a constructive manner.
