Significant Voter Deletions in Haryana and Andhra Pradesh Following Electoral Roll Revision

In a major development concerning electoral participation, the draft voter lists released on Friday indicate that over 16% of registered voters in Haryana and approximately 10.8% in Andhra Pradesh have been removed. This large-scale deletion forms part of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls aimed at ensuring accurate voter representation and updating the lists after the enumeration phase concluded on July 24.

In Haryana, the draft list saw the removal of around 33.8 lakh voters, accounting for 11.6% of the state’s electorate. The reasons for these deletions varied; approximately 24.1 lakh voters were removed due to permanent relocations or because they were not present during the revision process. Additionally, over 7.6 lakh names, representing 3.7%, were erased due to being marked deceased, while duplications accounted for the removal of more than 2 lakh names, or 0.9% of the registered voters.

Similarly, in Andhra Pradesh, the situation was almost as extensive, with nearly 45 lakh names deleted from the draft electoral roll. In this state, 22.3 lakh voters (5.3% of the electorate) were removed due to their permanent absence or relocation. Moreover, over 15.2 lakh names (3.6%) were struck off as they were reported deceased, and more than 7.3 lakh voters (1.7%) faced deletion due to duplicate entries.

As part of the electoral process, the authorities will address claims and objections from voters regarding their removal from the draft lists. This open forum for grievances will commence on July 31, providing an opportunity for those affected to contest their exclusion and ensure their electoral rights are upheld.
