India Urges Iran to Ensure Safety of Commercial Shipping Amid Regional Tensions

In a significant diplomatic move, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called upon Iran to refrain from any attacks targeting cargo ships and seafarers. This urgent appeal was made during a conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, amid escalating regional hostilities that have raised concerns for commercial maritime safety.

Jaishankar conveyed India’s profound worries regarding the recent spate of assaults on vessels navigating the critical Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global oil shipments. “I strongly urged that attacks on commercial shipping and seafarers be avoided under any circumstance,” he stated, emphasizing India’s stance against such aggressive actions. The minister made it clear that India condemns any form of attack, irrespective of the perpetrator.

The backdrop to this diplomatic engagement includes a troubling series of incidents over the past few weeks, where multiple cargo ships with Indian nationals on board have come under fire. The Indian government has reported that 16 Indians, including 10 seafarers, lost their lives in these conflicts. The fatalities were recorded in various locations: eight in Oman, four in the UAE, two in Kuwait, and one each in Saudi Arabia and Iraq. This grim toll has underscored the need for immediate action and dialogue.

In addition to his appeal for restraint, Jaishankar indicated that he was updated on Iran’s viewpoint regarding the ongoing developments in the region. He reiterated India’s commitment to fostering dialogue and diplomatic efforts to promote peace in West Asia. The Indian government believes that constructive discussions are essential in mitigating the tensions that have plagued this strategically important area.

In a proactive move to safeguard its citizens, the Indian government announced plans to establish a monitoring system to keep track of every Indian seafarer operating in the conflict-prone Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. This initiative aims to enhance the safety of Indian nationals working in these vulnerable maritime zones, ensuring their well-being amidst rising threats.
