Families Anxiously Await Release of Protestors Post Bihar Government’s Promise

Just two days after the Bihar government pledged to retract all police complaints against students involved in recent protests, families are left in limbo, anxiously waiting outside Patna’s Beur Central Jail for their loved ones’ release. The protests were sparked by demands for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, which were led by a satirical political group known as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

On July 27, the state government announced its decision to withdraw cases against protestors, aligning with an agreement between the central government and the CJP, following the latter’s month-long demonstrations at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The protests were largely fueled by frustrations over unresolved allegations of question paper leaks in India’s centralized medical entrance examination.

The CJP ceased its protests after securing the resignation of Pradhan and the commitment from the Narendra Modi government to drop all legal actions against the demonstrators. However, the reality outside the Beur Central Jail tells a different story. Families, filled with hope yet heavy with worry, continue to gather, waiting for news of their relatives trapped behind bars.

Among the crowd was Mukesh Kumar, a teenager from Patna, who was anxiously waiting for his older brother Jairam. The 17-year-old Class XII student had been arrested on July 25 during a gathering in Gandhi Maidan, where he joined fellow students to support the CJP’s campaign in Delhi. “He has been in jail for five days now. Why are they treating him like a criminal?” Mukesh lamented, highlighting the distress felt by many families caught in the aftermath of the protests.

As the wait continues, sentiments of anger and frustration are palpable among those outside the jail. Many families are calling for transparency and immediate action from the government to honor its promise. With hundreds of students still detained, the question remains whether the government will uphold its commitment and bring relief to those affected by the protests.
