In a dramatic turn of events, Ayodhya is witnessing internal strife within the Sangh Parivar over serious allegations surrounding the financial management of the Ram temple, built on the site of the former Babri Masjid. The controversy has sparked outrage among seers and devotees, particularly targeting the trust established by the Narendra Modi government to oversee the temple’s construction.
Dharam Das, a prominent seer and an influential figure in Ayodhya, has been vocal about his concerns regarding the handling of funds meant for the temple. Das, who has been involved in the disputes over the temple site since the 1940s, expressed dismay over claims of misappropriation of offerings made by devotees. “All the sadhus here are upset,” he stated, calling for Prime Minister Modi to take note of the situation.
Since its inception, the Ram Janmabhoomi movement has been a pillar of the BJP’s political narrative, culminating in the construction of a grand temple in 2024 after years of legal and social upheaval, including the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992. However, this sense of victory is now overshadowed by allegations that temple staff, under the trust’s supervision, have been involved in the misappropriation of cash and jewelry offerings contributed by worshippers.
The Uttar Pradesh government has responded to these claims by forming a special investigation team to delve into the allegations. Despite this development, the lack of a formal first information report has raised questions about the transparency of the investigation and the integrity of the trust managing the temple’s finances.
As the inquiry unfolds, the implications could resonate beyond just local protests; they may affect national sentiments tied to the Ram temple, a symbol of Hindutva ideology and a project of monumental significance for the BJP and its supporters. The growing dissatisfaction among seers and devotees could potentially challenge the party’s narratives and influence on the upcoming elections.
