Delhi has recorded its highest nighttime temperature for the month of May in almost 14 years, reaching a sweltering 31.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This significant temperature spike was noted at weather stations in Safdarjung and Lodhi Road, with the former registering a night temperature that is 5.2 degrees Celsius above the seasonal norm.
The Lodhi Road station also recorded unseasonably warm conditions, recording a nighttime temperature of 29.6 degrees Celsius, which is 4.6 degrees Celsius above normal. As a direct response to these rising temperatures, the IMD has issued an orange alert for heatwave conditions in the national capital region, signaling that local authorities should be prepared for action over the next five days.
The IMD defines a heat wave in the plains when the maximum daytime temperature remains at or above 40 degrees Celsius, coupled with a minimum temperature that is between 4.5 to 6.4 degrees Celsius above the normal range. With forecasts indicating that Delhi could see maximum temperatures soaring to 46 degrees Celsius later this week, residents are urged to take necessary precautions against heat-related health issues.
The situation isn’t confined to Delhi alone; other regions in India are also struggling with extreme heat. Maharashtra, for instance, has reported at least two confirmed fatalities and over 200 cases of heatstroke since the onset of March. This raises serious concerns about public health as the nation braces for a potentially severe heatwave.
As the weather department continues to monitor the situation closely, residents are encouraged to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities during peak hours. The IMD’s predictions for the coming days highlight the urgent need for preparedness as the nation faces one of the hottest spells in recent memory.
